How long do beeswax wraps last for?

3Pack Beeswax Wrap Eco Friendly Kitchen Wrap 4

Want to know how long beeswax wraps last? or what’s the shelf life of beeswax wraps? When looked after properly, beeswax wraps can last for up to one year. Excitingly, they can then be composted once the time comes to dispose of them. Follow the advice below to extend the lifespan of your beeswax wraps by as much as possible.

Whilst our beeswax wraps rarely get too dirty, you may sometimes need to wash them between uses. To wash them, simply rinse in the sink with lukewarm water and some mild dishwashing liquid. Avoid washing them with hot water, as this can wash the wax out of the wraps. You can also use a sponge or a cloth to wipe them down, before rinsing off the dishwashing liquid.

After washing your beeswax wraps, there is no need to wring them out. Simply hang them on a clothes airer or drying rack and leave them to air dry. Ensure that the wraps are completely dry before putting them away.

Once the wraps are dry, fold them carefully and store them in a drawer, or on a shelf. Make sure that they are stored somewhere where they will stay dry, and are away from any sources of heat.

It is normal for the wax to slowly begin to flake or break down over time. You can continue to use the wraps if this happens, and you can even refresh them if they start to look a little worse for wear.

When your beeswax wraps are looking crumpled and tired, here’s how to make them good as new. Heat your oven to a low heat of around 50-75 degrees, place the wraps onto some baking paper on a baking tray, and pop them into the oven for approximately 2-3 minutes.

This warms and slightly melts the wax, causing the cracks to fill in and the coating to smooth out. After 2-3 minutes, you should see the wax melt and spread, soaking back into the cotton. At this point, remove the wraps from the oven, and hang them up to allow the wax to dry. It should only take about one minute to dry and cool down.

We recommend doing this once every 1-3 months when your wraps begin to wear out. If this doesn’t seem to refresh them anymore, you can also try re-waxing them by sprinkling a small amount of grated beeswax over the sections that are worn, and heating as above.
